Culture Shock - Steam Machine

From the 'Transit EP'
Out 08/01/2016

Merging a huge spectrum of creative talents, this next EP from Culture Shock dissects not only his music but also his persona as an artist. Encompassing both his self-made, mechanical artwork as well as the diverse soundscape he reigns over, it's easy to see the depth of his creativity.

The four track EP demonstrates his classical training, one which served as the perfect backdrop for his intricate composition, driving from a range of influences… Something he'd soon become renowned for. From the legendary status of 'City Lights', which this year received the 'Record of The Day' status at Radio1, to the resounding riddims of heavy-hitters 'Troglodyte' and 'Ohrwurm', his output has not only been eclectic but steadily gaining momentum too.

Opening track 'Back to You' has lined the sets of dancefloor's heaviest hitters this summer. Whether it's on sold-out stages of the drum & bass capital at SW4, or sets across the Atlantic with support from Andy C and Sub Focus, the anticipation around its release has been invading cyberspace. Pounding subs underpin a soulfully reimagined vocal sample, which peaks between the ebb and flow of structured note arpeggios. A warped bassline beneath elevated note patterns add an extra stockiness allowing the record to detonate any club, whilst still leading you into the emotive crescendo of dancefloors worldwide.

Rolling out next is 'Tangents'. Ethereal, humanistic elements weave between snapping hi-hits and loops of synth, gradually building to manifest something more menacing. With a melody that only goes to pedestal an outstanding ingenuity, you pound against steely distortion, one which reverberates between each segment.

'Rush Connection' yet again stands as a testament to Culture Shock's honed craft, whilst being distinctive stylistically. A chiselled groove acts as a starting point, snipped up by slants of sample and served as a dynamic riddim to take you into any late night session. Then lastly, comes 'Steam Machine', peddled by kick drums and an incredibly chiselled bassline… Pulling together an EP whose announcement is set to ricochet across the industry. It's an explosive finish.

Adding the fourth track to an already expansive discography, this extension of Culture Shock's repertoire will only further push him into the spotlight. And with yet more sonic crafts already in the works, his true potential is only just being uncovered.

Rene LaVice - 'Drop It'

With the New Year beginning and having already released two critically acclaimed albums, Rene LaVice is ready to unleash yet another phenomenal LP into a discography which has grown him a formidable fan base. Following a slew of successes throughout 2017, which saw a hard grafted career path lead him even further under the spotlight, his singles on groundbreaking drum & bass imprint Ram Records have reignited the excitement which surrounded the artist when he was first signed to the label. As well as the announcement of his tastemaker Radio 1 slot, he’s levelled up since his appearance on the scene and continues to push the boundaries with every movement he’s made since.

Forthcoming in its lead up is ‘Drop it’, a dancefloor lead anthem which focuses on an epic build up and an even more cataclysmic breakdown. The track steps keenly into live drum instrumentals and slowly ticking beats, before Rene’s own vocal sample drives you deep through the track’s heart. The tell-tale Rene LaVice snare then kicks into play, before you’re weaved through an effortlessly tight mixdown, taking on hit after hit of unadulterated bass peddles. The producer reasserts himself as one of the most enigmatic and creative artists within the current climate, drawing on a host of influences to fully expose the music he draws inspiration from. ‘Drop it’ warbles like a siren, manifesting the image of all-out chaos when it’s launched from speaker stacks. Prepare yourself for the new sounds of Rene LaVice; 2018 has begun yet another epic chapter.

The album is pencilled for early summer and fans both old and new will be waiting patiently for the successor of ‘Play with Fire’. Set to be released on Ram Records, a label which has been twenty five years strong in the game and boasts some of the scene’s finest, it’s the perfect home for yet another game-changing Rene LaVice record.

Getting into the Halloween spirit, DC Breaks are unleashing two new terrifying slabs of bass. These heavyweight monsters have been biding their time in the producer’s digital record box, the beginning of a brand new musical journey for the duo. In the lead up to their debut album, this single will give you a small insight into what’s to come. Sitting at the nastier end of their vast musical spectrum, prepare to be brought into the sinisterly lit world of DC Breaks through their next offering ‘Arcade’ and ‘Creeper VIP’. Reminiscent of their earlier, heavy sound, it’s a production standard held tightly together with throw down hooks and hefty basslines.
Instantly recognizable, ‘Arcade’ is sure to set off both cyberspace and its baying electronic audience. Fans have been patiently waiting for its release, ever since it detonated its crowd at Glastonbury Festival last year. Winding up on crunching snare and quaking subs, its fluctuating bass notes take you down into the dark and dirty. A call to arms, ‘Arcade’ presents the buzzing energy of any late night drum & bass set. Proving the genre’s moody versatility, DC Breaks take you on a journey which moves you deeper with every sonic layer.
‘Creeper VIP’ takes on a track that’s already been making the club and festival circuits for years and offers up a rework. With more intense, flaming drum patterns but still featuring the same driving LFO of the original, DC Breaks flip a well-loved track on its head. An intimidating force, ‘Creeper VIP’ channels the same intensity yet has a more foreboding breakdown midway with different pitches, before gearing up once again for all-out anarchy. If you’re looking for the angrier side of DC Break’s discography, you’ve certainly found it on this flipside too. Despite the success of their vocal rollers, they’ve proved their ferocity still can’t be tamed.
An appetizer for what’s to come, DC Breaks have reaffirmed their heavyweight status.

Mob Tactics - ‘Dreamworld'

Mob Tactics
‘Dreamworld / Convoy’
Released 31st August
Ram Records
RAMM331

Mob Tactics are no strangers to the Ram Records discography. Having already been brought on board for Andy C’s ‘Nightlife 6’ instalment and Audio’s seminal ‘Ramlife’ compilation, with their exclusives ‘Wolf Trap’ and ‘Frenzy’, they’re set to return although this time they’re offering a standalone single on the imprint. ‘Dreamworld’ and ‘Convoy’ highlight how Mob Tactics appeared on Ram’s radar; primarily because of their dancefloor appeal and indisputable production levels. The duo have become a formidable part of drum & bass sets across the global circuit and with a single on Ram within their reach, they’re looking to reinforce their stronghold.

This two-track release gives different insights into the skills Mob Tactics have at their disposal. Explosive, yet still crafted with the upmost precision, both ‘Dreamworld’ and ‘Convoy’ are intrinsically underground whilst adhering to Ram’s high-reaching standards. ‘Dreamworld’ begins as you’d expect from a Mob Tactics record – with its crashing percussive breaks and zipping, heavyweight bassline, the track’s weightiness becomes apparent between each refined layer. Next, you’re introduced to ‘Convoy’, which differs from its forerunner through its use of synth and more uplifting undertones. The range offered up on each track shows how Mob Tactics have continued to test their limits, which is why they’re a perfect addition to the Ram Records catalogue.

2018 has seen many artists make guest appearances within the label’s roster and Mob Tactics make a welcome return. Ram still dominates the scene twenty five years on from its inception.

DC Breaks 'Never Stop' (S.P.Y Remix)

The art of remixing is something which DC Breaks hold in high regard – from their own cuts through to the artists they’ve chosen for their Different Breed reworks, their standards have been clear from the offset. Even the original release of their seminal LP featured a hugely diverse array of collaborative artists and musical signatures, which is why the duo came through Ram Records’ roster with so much garnered interest. And adding to the already popular twists from A.M.C & Turno, Flowidus and Tantrum Desire, more artists enter the fray for their own takes on DC Breaks’ sound.

S.P.Y and Synergy are next to take you into the deeper and darker world of Different Breed, drawing styles from opposite sides of the same spectrum and twisting them into something almost unrecognisable.

First up, S.P.Y moves through Never Stop, pushing DC Breaks’ more dancefloor, vocal-lead breakdowns and slamming them against a more tech-driven reimagining. S.P.Y is the master of driving a minimalist sound design whilst also smacking hard on its impact; between every clattering layer of drums and elevating blast of LFO, the original melody streams throughout his remix. The bare bones of Never Stop are clear to see, but S.P.Y makes his presence known through every crackle of bass.

Following in quick succession is Synergy’s version of Hustle, which dramatically switches gears and orchestrates a more stabbing descent into chaos. With Synergy’s neuro-infused background making itself known, their pounding kicks and snares catapult Hustle into a more cataclysmic scene, one which is sure to gain a following throughout their loyal following of DJs. The pair have already found themselves as a centrepiece within the darker side of drum & bass throughout recent months and following a release on the infamous Ram Records imprint, this heat is about to switch up another notch. More remixes are still to come from DC Breaks’ debut Different Breed LP and looking back at its first consecutive unveilings, their full power hasn’t yet been felt.

Calyx & Teebee return with their second release of 2017 following an extensive US tour, taking it back to the sound which originally made them so notorious. Their first single from this year Ruffian stripped back the vocal-lead records found throughout their second LP and presented something more reminiscent of their darker selections. Scarmanga is no different, alongside collaborator Mortlock. And with two successful LPs on the Ram Records imprint, Scarmanga is unafraid to break out of the commercially viable paradigm and instead represents the heavier part of their drum & bass sets. The record takes you back to their roots, a welcome reimagining of the music which made them so identifiable.
A track which has already been played out behind the decks in recent months, Scarmanga opens on strung out melodies and a cleverly deceptive intro. The unnerving drive and repetitive, heavyweight bass rifts create a hard-hitting cut which is difficult to disentangle yourself from. It’s easy to see why Scarmanga has done so much damage on the dancefloor. Alongside mixing samples and snapping instrumentation, Calyx & Teebee keep hitting with every carefully constructed break, packing a mean punch.
With more releases scheduled in over the coming year, Calyx & Teebee yet again bring their slick progression and add another building block for their next offering. Thanks to tracks like Ruffian and Scarmanga, audiences both new and old will appreciate the music which made Calyx & Teebee such revered icons within their field.

Alongside the delicious aggressiveness that made Audio so renowned, his 'Beastmode' LP cracks him open like you've never heard him before. Fiercely powerful, yet intricately different, each cut from his debut album on the Ram Records imprint packs a very different punch whilst hitting with the same fierceness and wealth of talent.
'Beastmode' reflects all his output to date. Whether it's the old-school flavor of virus, or the steppy-unapologetic riddims he's served up for Ram, this record won't leave you questioning who rules supreme over the genre's murkier waters.
Whether it's the half-time, two stepping 'Move it Along' or the pulsing, snarling undertones of 'Thud', you're blessed with a barrage full of fresh sonic assaults. 'Thunder Ride' serves as the perfect opener, a brand new record with synth-laddered foreboding intro which pushes you below the surf. Tinkling hi-hats and a distorted LFO adds shockwaves throughout the mix, submerging you even deeper. Urgent, pulsing and nastily crafted, this is Audio and his more fearsome.
On the other hand, 'Rogue' presents a clanking, runaway riddim that snaps its teeth with every break. Stacked between ominous build ups and jaunty samples, the second drop flairs out as angrily as the first, demonstrating Audio's ingenious sound design.
And flipping the switch once again is 'Sovereign', a nod to the producer's roots and a track that gradually builds its presence throughout. Between warbling stabs and peddled kick drum, you're drawn by the aural nerves. Elevating beat patterns set you up for another descent into madness, through a stringently tight composition.
Featuring artists, such as drum & bass heavyweight Prolix, also take center stage. Their collaboration 'Creatures', alongside the revered lyricist Nuklear MC, adds a welcomed surprise. 'Creatures' delivers everything you'd expect and more; steroid-pumped subs, the dark overture of Nuklear and apocalyptic atmospherics.
Also featured on its weighty track listing are singles 'Make it Happen', 'Overdose', 'Drop it Human' and 'Shatterdome'. They were a precursor for what was to come, which signified one of the darkest, most uncompromising productions yet on Ram Records… In all of its twenty five years of history.

Renowned for his funk fuelled basslines and ricocheting melodies, Culture Shock has taken Crystal Fighter's 'Love Alight' into new depths.

The original reverberates throughout the remix, laying down a pounding rhythm which sits perfectly beneath the track's ethereal vocals. Keeping Crystal Fighter's rocking dance-floor ethics, but with an echo that alludes to Culture Shock's production style, this is definitely a revamp not to miss.

With Zane Lowe pedestalling the first glimpse into Bensley's diverse soundscape, 'Fandango' was a precursor for this forthcoming debut. 'Next Generation' is a bold move; with drum & bass being a genre which has certainly stood the test of time, newcomers have incredibly big shoes to fill. However, Bensley incorporates an innovative and incredibly intricate set of production skills to hold a title of his own.
But what can you expect from an artist who was signed after sending a single demo to revered label head Andy C. That's despite having no previous releases or having any other music available to stream online. He was somewhat of a mystery.
'Fandango' was that track. And it was premiered as a world exclusive on leading tastemaker Radio1, which followed with support from the likes of Mistajam on 1xtra, as well as DJs on both Kiss and XFM.
Already demonstrating his widespread appeal with just one track, his air of mystery is now about to be broken. He's definitely an anomaly; being only nineteen and having impressed so many people.
'Next Generation' is a 10-track journey through an impressively diverse soundscape. Whether it's half-time breakdowns or the incorporation if cross genre-pollination it shows an astounding ability which will not go unrecognised.
From the opening bars of 'Wildfire', to the softly spoken pads and atmospheric note arpeggios of 'Rain Dance', then wrapped up by aptly named closing track 'Aftermath', there's no denying Bensley's masterful artistry.
Title-track 'Next Generation' leads you by the hand with snippets of humanistic sample, flowing in and out of its construct. It's built upon by striking note progressions, a relaying of patterns which chop and change the mix. Carefully placed subs add impact, with emphasis given on each break, carrying the track forward down a steep drop with each slab of bass.
Drawing together a dizzying and fresh array of new sounds, this album indicates why Bensley is a forerunner within the new generation of music comers. Its representative of the fast paced technological setting of music production he grew up around; it also proves that Bensley is able to tap into dimensions which are often unheard of in other bodies of work.

RAM25 - The Album - Out Now
https://www.ramrecords.com/download/ramm300d

Standing as one of the most resounding electronic music labels in history, Ram Records has finally hit its 25-year milestone. Established by Andy C and Ant Miles in 1992, the label has boldly placed itself on the forefront since its inception, acting as a foundation for the drum & bass genre and seeing through its development from the very beginning.

Once heralded as a platform for Andy C’s own productions, the imprint expandedmassively, becoming a world-renowned hub for some of the biggest drum & bass artists to ever hit the scene. The label has gone from strength to strength, helping to pedestal house-hold names such as Chase & Status, Sub Focus and Wilkinson. From the charts to the radio airwaves, they’ve continued their crossover success.Receiving daytime airplay and top ten positions unceasingly over the last decade, the producers have enabled Ram’s influence to seep into every corner of dance music.

Alongside support from BMG and current label manager Jim Gash, 2017 has seen Ram Records ascend to new heights. And to celebrate their twenty fifth year, Ram will be rereleasing twenty five original remastered classics from their definitive back catalogue as well as seventeen remixes, including reworks from Chase & Status, Killbox, DC Breaks, Frankee, Total Science, Benny L, Kasra and Enei, Ant Miles and Shimon, Bladerunner, DJ Marky Calyx & Teebee, Sound in Noise and Metrik. All in, it’s Ram’s most ambitious project to date.

The 25th year of Ram’s history is looking to be its most memorable yet. Both musically and through their major city UK tour dates, Ram’s versatile roster is still being pushed to new borders. Quarter of a century on and the record label is as strong as ever.

Rene LaVice
‘Far From Perfect’
Out Now

https://ramrecords.com/download/rammlp36d

Rene LaVice’s journey continues with his third LP on formative drum & bass imprint Ram Records, a label whose history spans across two decades. After being exclusively signed, following his pivotal ‘Headlock’ release, the Canadian stalwart has remained a centrepiece of Ram’s roster and his back catalogue is nothing short of groundbreaking. The same consistency has been administered to his forthcoming ‘Far From Perfect’ package, which builds on the foundations of both ‘Insidious’ and ‘Play with Fire’ to present another look into his versatile capabilities. It proves that alongside a plethora of taste-making records and the announcement of his BBC Radio 1 residency, Rene’s career has flourished, due to the creativity which streams through his music.

Having already teased ‘Far from Perfect’ through the high octane ‘Cold Crush’ ft. Gydra, his epic vocal slammer ‘Let you Go’ ft. Jareth, the emotive allure of Faye on ‘Twilight’ as well as the heavier hitting breakdowns of singles ‘Woohoo’, ‘Sound Barrier / Squeegee’ and ‘How Do I Kill’, his forthcoming album is once again set to defy expectations; Expectations which were already set dizzyingly high.
Still unheard is Rene’s second offering with Ivy Mairi ‘Every Time’, reminiscent of their previous collaboration ‘The Calling’ which saw them receive daytime airplay through Radio 1’s A list. Isaac Evans also joins the list of vocalists alongside Rene on ‘Can’t Get Enough’, with its subdued party vibe and familiar undertones. Tracks like ‘Slappo’ and ‘Detonate’ add a harder edge and together they encompass the vast musical spectrum Rene has at his fingertips.
From newcomer to genre icon, Rene LaVice has risen through the ranks and this is unsurprising after studying his back catalogue. And ‘Far From Perfect’ will add to this legacy, whilst also becoming a defining moment within Ram Records’ history.

June Miller return for their penultimate release, a duo who’ve spent years defining their sound within the Ram Records roster and will continue to do years after their final record. From their first single on Ram, to their debut LP Robots and Romans, they’ve supplied some of the heaviest cuts Ram’s discography offers and their next output will be no different.

Dominator and A Pinda Funk also bring on board two featuring artists, fellow Europeans James Marvel and MC Mota.
Whilst James Marvel has become a renowned part of the drum & bass scene in Belgium’s cultural hub Brussels, MC Mota lends his vocals to an array of artists throughout the genre and together they present an undeniably eclectic outfit.

Dominator moves you through an intricately layered world built up slowly by grinding bass and clattering patterns of percussion.
MC Mota’s ragga-like vocals begin to sift through the mix, leading you into a climatic drop. Instigating a beat-lead riot, you’re attacked from all sides, with crushing drums throwing punch after punch. Dominator is your introduction into chaos, whilst still being meticulously constructed.

Next comes A Pinda Funk, a clever play on words with an even more ingenious sound design. Cutting through heavy LFO with its sonic edges, a quick vocal sample from MC Mota narrates the slow descent into anarchy. With its funky elements displayed from start to finish, A Pinda Funk grabs you with catchy hooks and a techy melody, proving that both June Miller and James Marvel have a multifaceted production standard. This single demonstrates why June Miller became so notorious not just within drum & bass, but also within the army of its most definitive imprint. And they will remain as such, within the headphones of music listeners everywhere.
