DJ Food - Dark Lady (Alix Perez Remix) Full Length

DJ FOOD ( http://www.djfood.org/djfood/discography )

Originally produced by Coldcut on the ninja tune independent record label, the DJ Food project started in 1990 on the premise of providing metaphorical "food for DJs". DJ Food released the Jazz Brakes series, with Jazz Brakes Volume 3 being the most successful. The records consisted of collections of breaks, loops and samples, ideal for mixing, remixing and producing the trademark ninja tune blend of jazz & hip hop.

Volumes 4 and 5 of the Jazz Brakes series, co-created with DJ / producer PC transcend the breakbeat compilation format to stand as artist albums in their own right. The later DJ Food albums have developed with shades of latin, dub, techno, ambient, and jungle flavouring the funk.

The 1995 album, A Recipe for Disaster was a conscious move away from the Jazz Brakes volumes to form more of an identity as an artist, and a remix album of tracks from all 6 LPs, entitled Refried Food was released the following year. Their last release, Kaleidoscope, featured guest artists including Bundy K. Brown (formerly of Tortoise, Directions In Music, Pullman) and voiceover artist and jazz poet, Ken Nordine).

With a seemingly single DJ name, it is often wrongly assumed that DJ Food is single person. In fact, a whole host of DJs, producers and musicians have performed under the name, so the evolutionary nature of the DJ Food sound comes as no surprise. Matt Black and Jonathan More (aka Coldcut) were responsible for starting Jazz Brakes series in the early 90s. Along the way they met Patrick Carpenter, who, being listed on the liner notes simply by his initials, was often mistakenly thought to be a Personal computer. A loose collaborative team began to form as more like-minded people arrived at the party, including Paul Brook, Paul Rabiger, Strictly Kev and Issac Elliston.

Although keeping their hand in as DJs on the albums, Matt & Jon couldn't perform DJ sets twice in one night under both aliases of Coldcut & DJ Food, so they handed the mantle of live DJing over to PC and Strictly Kev. Later, PC became so busy with The Cinematic Orchestra that he decided to quit, at least temporarily leaving DJ Food as a Strictly Kev solo project.

In addition to The Cinematic Orchestra, PC also recorded with J. Swinscoe under the band name Neptune. Strictly Kev has recorded under the name Flexus.

ALIX PEREZ ( http://www.myspace.com/alixperez )

North London based DJ/producer Alix Perez is one of the strongest young producers in the Drum and Bass scene and undoubtedly one of its most prolific up and coming DJs. Already with a number of releases on established labels such as Shogun Audio, Liquid V, Bassbin, Creative Source, Horizons, Progress, Brigand and Fokuz, there aren't many drum and bass DJs on the circuit without a Perez tune in their bag.

Originally from Belgium, Drum and Bass comes naturally to 22-year-old Alix, who has immersed himself in music from an early age. Alix started to DJ at the age of 14 and progressed into production at 17, collaborating with other hotly tipped artists such as Jenna G, Redeyes, Sabre, MC Fats, Spectrasoul and Specific.

With regular appearances at Fabio's legendary "Swerve" night and Bar Rumba's well-respected "Movement" weekly, Alix is also receiving bookings worldwide from Paris to Toronto. With his smooth yet sophisticated selection, drawing for all the latest dubs, he does not fail as a DJ. Alix also has numerous tracks play-listed on BBC 1Xtra and receives heavy support from respected players within the scene: from Bukem to Bailey, he has been repped as "the one to watch" and "representing the future of Drum and Bass."

Alix has recently been featured on the front cover of ATM Magazine as one of the "leaders of the nu-skool" and has had a variety of press across worldwide dance magazines; he has also been nominated for two awards as Breakthrough DJ and Breakthrough Producer of the year at the BBC 1Xtra Bass Awards. It goes without saying that his strong exposure and reputation for putting the soul back into drum and bass is well-earned.

OLIVER TANK ( http://soundcloud.com/oliver-tank )

Oliver Tank is a young Sydney-based producer and musician who is turning heads and melting hearts with his enchanting down-tempo electronica.

For Sydney avant guard artist Oliver Tank, everything happens in slow motion. His first EP is a gorgeous display of flickering light, vast shades of atmosphere and haunting beauty. With Bon Ivoresk vocals and layers of strings, echoes, clapping, droplets, droplets and gentle yet pulling baselines, Oliver Tank has a uniqueness that brings warmth and chill together. One moment you're walking down an old corridor, the next you're feeling the sun on your cheek watching the waves. Wherever it takes you, one thing is clear - it's all about the pace.

BATHS ( http://www.myspace.com/bathsmusic )

For mercurial Los Angeles music-maker Will Wiesenfeld, Baths has been a long time coming. The 21-year-old has spent the better part of his days living amidst "pleasant" and "unremarkable" in the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley, so perhaps it's due to a general lack of local inspiration that Wiesenfeld's own work has never fit into a prefab box of its own. Over the last six years, under the handle of [Post-Foetus], Wiesenfeld has gainfully explored the intersections and outer reaches of both electronic and acoustic music. With Baths, his eclecticism finds its greatest focus yet, in a hail of lush melodies, ghostly choirs, playful instrumentation and stuttering beats.

Wiesenfeld's trip began at age 4, when he willed his parents into enrolling him in piano lessons. (The family upright, purchased that same year, sits in his bedroom today.) By 13, he'd begun recording his own music using Digital Performer and a MIDI keyboard -- a brief, ill-advised foray into Eurobeat that was set right when Wiesenfeld heard Björk for the first time. Mind blown, he quickly boned up on viola, contrabass, and guitar and took the name [Post-Foetus], stringing together countless live configurations to execute his increasingly inimitable compositions. [Post-Foetus]' fourth album -- a Dntel-ish, song-based mélange dubbed The Fabric -- was released on Mü-Nest in January 2010.

Though Baths represents the next evolution in Wiesenfeld's oeuvre -- which also includes the excellent ambient project Geotic -- it came together under nigh-opposite circumstances. In September of 2009, [Post-Foetus] was invited by L.A. electronicist Daedelus to share a bill with a handful of local Beat Music luminaries. Witnessing a burgeoning movement firsthand sparked something in Wiesenfeld that the 'burbs never could. In a fit of inspiration, Baths was born, though not into a preexisting scene. As is to be expected, this music goes its own way: fueled by spontaneity, tempered by Wiesenfeld's background in classic songwriting. Those two influences collide in glorious ways on Cerulean, Baths' stunning debut.

BURIAL (http://www.myspace.com/burialuk)

Burial is an electronic musician from South London. His eponymous debut album was released in 2006 to critical acclaim. The Wire magazine named it their album of the year and it came fifth in the Mixmag 2006 Album of the Year list.
On Friday, September 28th 2007, a new Burial album was announced, and Untrue was released 6 weeks later on November 5th.

Although both albums have been met with much critical acclaim, Burial remained anonymous until August 2008, stating in a past interview that "only five people know I make tunes".
In February 2008, The Independent reported that Burial was an alumnus of south London's Elliott School named William Bevan (another alumnus, Hot Chip's Joe Goddard, said in 2006 that Burial was in the year above him). The school's alumni also include Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet, with whom Bevan has collaborated.

Telefon Tel Aviv - Bubble And Spike (unofficial video)

TELEFON TEL AVIV ( http://www.myspace.com/telefontelaviv )

Telefon Tel Aviv is a music collective based in Chicago, IL started by Josh Eustis and the late Charlie Cooper of New Orleans, Louisiana. The two originally met in high school, but did not begin working on music together until after university studies. Since 1999 Josh and Charlie had been working to cultivate their sound, based largely in electronic music, but that also showed flourishes of classical, vintage soul, ambient drone, and noise, among other things. The group continues as a mostly solo project of Josh Eustis after Charlie Cooper's death in January 2009.

In early 2000, the duo collaborated with Danny Lohner, Trent Reznor, and Alan Moulder on several remixes for Nine Inch Nails's then-to-be-released remix EP, Things Falling Apart. Shortly thereafter, Telefon Tel Aviv resumed work on their debut LP, Fahrenheit Fair Enough, for Chicago's Hefty Records, while at the same time completing the original score for the film Newport South. In 2002, the duo paired with L'Altra's Lindsay Anderson to release an EP featuring the single, Sound In A Dark Room. Work on the sophomore LP, Map of What Is Effortless, was completed in summer of 2003. On May 15th of 2007, a retrospective of their remix work for other artists was released on Hefty Records. Work on their third LP had been ongoing since late 2006 and wrapped up with the album Immolate Yourself's release on January 20th, 2009.

Over the past few years, together and separately, the duo completed production work for many other artists, including Marc Hellner/Pulseprogramming, L'Altra, The Album Leaf, Apparat, Belong, The Race, and others. They built a studio in Chicago to work on all of their projects.

Charlie Cooper passed away on Thursday 22nd January 2009, after taking an accidental overdose of sleeping pills. Josh Eustis later posted a confirmation on the band's Myspace page and the Telefon Tel Aviv website still shows an epitaph for Cooper. Josh continues to play Telefon Tel Aviv songs live as a duo with close friend Fredo Nogueira, but has said that the future of the band as regards recording new material remains uncertain.

Pieter Nooten & Michael Brook - Suddenly I (music video)

PIETER NOOTEN ( www.pieternooten.com/ )

Pieter Nooten's musical career starts as early as the late 70s. Starting out as the drummer in a local symphonic rock band, Nooten quickly changes to bass guitar and later keyboards, playing in different bands all over the place.
At the height of house squatting culture and New Wave, Nooten meets
Anka Wolbert and Ronny Moorings who just formed Xymox together. During the mid-eighties Xymox records two highly acclaimed albums on 4AD.

Nooten teams up with Michael Brook to record Sleeps with the fishes, also released on 4AD.This Osoundtrack to heaven (Melody Maker) would become Nooten's highly acclaimed masterpiece and Omaintains a cult status up until this day (amazon.com).

In 1989 Xymox signs to PolyGram N.Y. and release their third album, "Twist of Shadows". By 1990, in spite of the band's success, Nooten decides to leave Xymox due to growing internal musical differences. Whilest Xymox clearly wants to stick to their 80's roots, Nooten starts to explore new musical directions. The new, young dance culture intrigues him and a post as in-house producer at the famous One4Two studio's in Amsterdam is readily undertaken.

During the first half of the nineties Nooten produces countless dance 12inches and ambient orientated music for labels and projects(Hypercycle/First Contact/Ultimate Dream Mix), some of which reach the national record charts.

By 1995 Nooten moves back over to London and teams up with Anka again who has by now also left Xymox (for similar reasons).
Nooten has become somewhat tired with the slowly more and more morose dance music. He signs a publishing deal with Momentum (London) and it looks their second cooperation proves to be quite succesfull again. Anka and Pieter sign to EMI (NYC) under the name Vaselyn.
However, due to record company internal re-organizations, the Vaselyn project in London gets unexpectedly and suddenly cut short. Anka and Nooten decided to take the material of Vaselyn with them knowing that some day, this material will get its release.

Around 2004 Anka and Pieter start producing Sophie Zeyl's debut album Two Ways of Running. When recordings are finished in 2005, Pieter starts producing and remixing the material for OURSPACE. Nooten wants nothing more then writing and releasing the music he always kept close at heart.

³Pieter Nooten¹s "Sleeps With The Fishes" is adept at taking what should be morose music and converts it into something resplendent.
And it maintains that sad, beautiful sensation throughout its length. Not too many albums have such a perfectly-realized mood and atmosphere, one that draws you into its haunting world and stays with you long after the last song ends. But"Sleeps With The Fishes" is just such an album.

And though some of its content delves into the Goth and ambient genres, it easily avoids the former's self-indulgent melodramatics and the latter's vacuousness. (Opus.com)

It's hard to imagine this collaboration between Pieter Nooten (from Xymox) and ambient, experimental guitarist Michael Brook working any better So Sleeps With the Fishe's is quite dark, but it's equally beautiful and uplifting in the same instance. Nooten and Brook are restrained in the creation of their moody aesthetic, but the songs are a delight from start to finish. It's amazing that material that's so calmly paced and atmospheric is so enjoyable.
Sleeps With the Fishes could not be a more perfect dark
ambient, experimental album. It's essential listening for fans of 4AD,
ambient music, minimalism, experimental electronic music, and morose themes alike. This album is an overlooked masterpiece.
~ Tim DiGravina , (AMG)

THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS ( www.thenewpornographers.com/ )

The New Pornographers are a Canadian indie rock group formed in 1997 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Their sound is influenced by that of such power pop bands as The Cars and Cheap Trick, but they use much more sophisticated rhythms and chord changes. Although it was widely reported that the New Pornographers got their name from a pamphlet put out by televangelist Jimmy Swaggart condemning rock 'n' roll as "the new pornography," Carl Newman has stated that he came up with the name after watching a Japanese film called The Pornographers.

Carl Newman, who writes most of the band's material, has said, "When I seriously started to try to write songs, my main influences were, like, Burt Bacharach, Jim Webb, and Brian Wilson. Those were the guys I kinda looked at their music and went, 'What the hell are they doing here?' I was just fascinated by the structures and the harmonics."

The melody of the first and eponymous track on their second album Electric Version, for instance, begins with an arpeggiated diminished triad —- a rare and strange opening flourish for a pop song.

The band has released five albums to date:
Mass Romantic (2000)
Electric Version (2003)
Twin Cinema (2005)
Challengers (2007)
Together (2010)

The band members include:
- Carl Newman - vocals, guitar, ebow, synthesizer, harmonica, pump organ, xylophone
- Dan Bejar - vocals, guitar, synthesizer, melodion
- Kathryn Calder - vocals, piano
- Neko Case - vocals, tambourine
- John Collins - bass, guitar, synthesizer, ebow, vocals
- Kurt Dahle - drums, percussion, vocals
- Todd Fancey - guitar
- Blaine Thurier - synthesizer
- Nora O'Connor - vocals

THOM YORKE ( www.myspace.com/thomyorkemusic )

Thomas Edward Yorke (born 7 October, 1968 in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, England) is best known as the lead singer of the English alternative rock band Radiohead. He has also recorded as a solo musician. His debut album, The Eraser, debuted July 10th 2006 in the UK and July 11th in the US. Two singles were released from the album, "Harrowdown Hill" and "Analyse".

Yorke formed Atoms for Peace, who toured in 2010 performing the entirety of The Eraser. The rock 'supergroup' features Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, drummer Joey Waronker, and percussionist Mauro Refosco.

The song "Black Swan" was used as the end theme to the 2006 film adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novel A Scanner Darkly and was also a successful hit on American alternative radio in the summer of 2006. "Analyse" was also used on the end credits of the film The Prestige. 2006 also saw the release of a Japan-only EP entitled Spitting Feathers, which collected together the five b-sides from the "Analyze" and "Harrowdown Hill" singles.

A collection of remixes from The Eraser from such electronic luminaries as Burial, Four Tet, Modeselektor, Various Production and Surgeon were released as MP3 files initially in 2007, followed by a series of limited 12" in 2008. These were eventually released on CD as The Eraser Rmxs album.
He mainly plays electric guitar, acoustic guitar and piano, but has also played drums and bass guitar (notably during the Kid A and Amnesiac Radiohead sessions). He has one brother, Andy, of the band the unbelievable truth. Yorke currently lives in central Oxford with his partner, Rachel Owen, a printmaker who holds a doctorate in art history, and their two children, Noah, born in 2001 (to whom the Radiohead album Amnesiac was dedicated) and Agnes, born 2004 (to whom Yorke dedicated The Eraser).
