What are the most famous traditional Asian instruments?
Erhu
The erhu will probably be the traditional instrument that you’ll be most likely to see in a trip to China. You might see it played non-professionally for entertainment in public parks, and it is also played by street musicians.
Pronounced èrhú (urrh-hoo) in Mandarin, it is a two-string, violin-like instrument that is played with a bow like a violin bow. It isn’t as loud a violin because the soundbox is small. Erhus generally retain the traditional tuning system, so they may sound odd to Western ears. It allows for a high degree of virtuosity, covers three octaves, and can be made to imitate the sound of Chinese singing and birds and horses. It produces a melancholic sound.
Shakuhachi
One of the most popular traditional Japanese wind instruments is the shakuhachi. Better known as the Japanese flute, this instrument has been used by Zen Buddhists as a spiritual tool for meditation practices known as ‘suizen’ (吹禅).
Held vertically, the shakuhachi has four holes on the front and one on the back and is traditionally made of bamboo.
Used for meditative purposes, shakuhachi music was originally used for personal spiritual enlightenment rather than public performance.
Koto
The koto (箏) is a Japanese plucked half-tube zither and the national instrument of Japan. It is derived from the Chinese zheng and se, and similar to the Mongolian yatga, the Korean gayageum and ajaeng, the Vietnamese đàn tranh, the Sundanese kacapi, and the Kazakhstan jetigen.
The music made from the koto is said to be romantic. Notable koto artists include Yatsuhashi Kengyo, Tadao Sawai, and Kazue Sawai.
Guzheng
Pronounced gǔzhēng (goo-jung) in Mandarin, it is a large 18–23-or-more stringed instrument. It is said that it is an ancestor of the Japanese koto.
It isn’t commonly played in parks or on the streets. It is meant for Chinese opera and concert performances, and it is often played in traditional music ensembles. It is usually played by female musicians. Unlike Japanese koto players who kneel on the floor, Chinese musicians sit in chairs in front of guzheng desks.

► ► ►What makes the OST of Cyberpunk 2077 sound dark? And why do we like it?
Usually, when we hear about dark music we imagine rock bands and gothic-styled music spliced with creepy orchestra soundtrack from horror movies. But it's not an electronic, pop, background, or even hip hop track that comes to mind when we think about dark sounds.
The emotion of dark music can be cinematic — and that’s a big reason why there is so much appeal to darker emotions. If you think of scary movies or particularly poignant love scenes, the music is dramatic and pulls at your heartstrings. While hearing symphonic-esque soundscapes, you feel that cinematic quality exists in the undertones of background music beats. Generally, distended dissonance makes the music sound creepy, and stronger dissonance is more frightening. When it comes to orchestration, tremolo strings and the low end of the piano are often considered to be very grim or creepy. It’s important to understand, however, that at different points in history within different cultures, music had different connotations. What we consider creepy or dark now, used to just be considered dissonant or tremolo. Sure, a midi synth can’t compete with an orchestra, while talking about electronic and modern music, it can emulate an orchestra сreating those rich and lush chords and ambient atmospheres.
A lot of music, while "dark", is also very thought-provoking and creates a slight pleasurable tension. And it's important to distinguish here between scary, creepy music and dark music as even though they’re related they have different purposes and atmospheric tones. Music, fear, and pleasure have always been related, then. Scientific studies have found that animals with a stronger ability to distinguish pitches also have a heightened ability to specialize their emotional responses to given situations. There is a direct link between our ability to interpret pitch variations and our ability to feel. Dissonant music puts our pitch-interpreting abilities to the test because they're unfamiliar. We get a cognitive workout struggling to derive an appropriate emotional response to such a challenging group of tones. And when all that tension gets released back into a more harmonic or normal passage, we experience a tremendous rush.
But everyone has a different tolerance for these things, and certainly, not everybody likes darky music. But it surely has a lot of influence on contemporary artists and all of the genres. And on some fundamental level, when music slightly scares us, that's because we want to be afraid. It feels good to let loose.

How to deal with city noise?
To a certain degree, we’re all sensitive to noise. But sometimes noise can be extremely invasive, distressing, and overstimulating.
Some people love making noise. There are cars with giant stereos or the guy a few doors up from us with a giant Harley that shakes the whole neighborhood when he starts it up. But there is also the general din from construction, from trucks and buses, from honking horns. All in all, we all contribute to the noise of city life because sound is the last thing we associate with pollution.
Trying to fight the noise is unlikely to work. It is not going to go away because you don’t like it. Instead you can learn a couple of tricks to help you be above it.
One of the first steps to beat anger and anxiety is mindfulness and meditation. A white noise machine or earplugs can help to muffle the sounds that have been bothering you. You could also listen to relaxing chillout music, rich with ambient sounds. Block the distractions by listening to this dreamy playlist. Being nice, or being smart: What leads to success?
A study has found that intelligence alone is a marker of success in the workplace with aspects like generosity and conscientiousness only having a small effect. Those with lower IQs are less consistent or able to predict the consequences of their actions, they said. Personality traits such as trust, generosity, agreeableness, and conscientiousness affected behavior but in smaller measures, and only initially.
Researchers at the Universities of Bristol, Minnesota in the US and Heidelberg in Germany devised a series of strategy games to test cooperative behavior in social and workplace situations. Those with a higher IQ cooperated more and earned more money as part of the game.
The study concluded that society is cohesive if people are smart enough to be consistent in their strategies and to foresee the consequences of their actions.
Prof Eugenio Proto, of Bristol University, said: “People might naturally presume that people who are nice, conscientious, and generous are automatically more cooperative.
“But intelligence is the primary condition for a socially cohesive, cooperative society. This scenario can be applied to the workplace. A good heart and behavior have an effect too but it’s transitory and small.”

Does music facilitate the process of waking up?
There is research by psychologist David M. Greenberg that shows the effect of tunes that gradually pick up their pace. He's discovered that listening to music that starts off slow and quiet and builds to faster, more upbeat songs are best suited to help the brain work its way out of sleep inertia. Sleep inertia is the state of grogginess lasting fifteen to thirty minutes after you wake up. But it's not a secret that many people feel sleepy for a larger period of time in the morning. What music may boost or deteriorate our cognitive performance?
We all know that multitasking is among the worst enemies of productivity at work. Listening to music, The research on the effect of music listening on work performance, however, argues that such indicators as quality-of-work and time-on-task are notably higher with the music implemented into the office routine.
