You might feel that the way we consume music now is sophisticated enough. We get a personalized playlist delivered to us every Friday, home assistants like Alexa mean we can simply call out for the music we want, and Airpods and other ‘wearables’ have accelerated things further. All these advancements have helped make sure that we’ll see a doubling in overall recorded music revenues in the next ten years.
Even so, Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music are investing heavily in biometric recommendation technology that would enable users to stream music based on their mood and environment. Recently it was revealed that Spotify had been granted a patent for speech recognition tech, which would listen for background noises to see whether you’re alone or at a party, as well as traffic and bird noises to figure out whether you’re at home or out for a walk. It’ll even determine what your emotional state is. Using all that data, it’ll automatically generate a playlist.
The music we love is a vital part of our identity, and automation risks removing the most meaningful aspect of it: discovery, by the humans and the communities involved in it. The issue with ‘hyper-personalisation’ right now is that it feels, well, not very personal at all. Algorithms have diluted the concept of music discovery, a horizon on which crate digging is replaced by data mining, and it’s very difficult for an algorithm to replicate the joy of hearing a record your mate told you about or that song you heard at a festival.
Rather than whittling emotion away from music discovery, though, some experts believe that technology could actually enhance things. It’s meant to give us better access and a better experience and It should not replace people sharing their favorite songs and artists. New technology, however, can empower the music industry to think of itself in new ways.

How does music help us to get through hard times?
Most of us have a collection of songs and tunes that touch us strongly, attaching melodies, song lyrics to stories, and memorable moments of our lives. Even if you don’t play instruments you know a bunch of songs that are sure to lift you. The evidence of the benefits of listening to music is quite clear - in the past few decades, music therapy has played a significant role in all facets of healing.
Researchers say that music was first found to be helpful in patients during operations in 1914 and since then several studies have investigated the effects of music on emotions, pain, and sensation. Types of music used in investigations were classical, instrumental, relaxing, or patient's choice music. It is proven that satisfying music eases anxiety and discomfort during surgeries or unpleasant procedures. It helps to restore lost speech or lose stuttering - if patients start to sing their words instead of just saying them it activates the right brain hemisphere, enabling the speech centers once again. During physical rehabilitation music therapy enhances people's physical, psychological, cognitive, and emotional functioning. Music therapy also decreases pain perception, reduces the amount of pain medication needed, helps relieve depression in pain patients, and gives them a sense of better control over their pain.
During these uneasy events, we turn to music to heal our hearts and souls. What’s the difference between a rhythm and a beat?
Beat
Think of the beat as the music’s skeleton.
Beat is tempo, pace, or the time it takes to play a piece. Beat is often demarcated by a metronome, device that produces a steady pulse at the rate of x per minute. So a metronome marking of 60 would have 60 pulses per minute, or one per second, while a marking of 120 would have 120 pulses per minute or two per second. Throughout the entire piece, the metronome would mark out the same pace of the beat, regardless of what the other instruments were doing rhythmically around it.
Rhythm
Rhythm can be confused with beat because sometimes the beat is also the rhythm. For instance, in a piece with a 4/4 time signature, a section of only quarter notes would be both the beat and the rhythm. However, while beat must be constant, rhythm is, by definition, variable. Rhythm is the length and accent given to a series of notes in a piece. The rhythm determines the length of the notes and the pitch whether they go up or down. Beside the length of notes, rhythm is also created when some notes are emphasized over others.
In essence, a music piece’s beat is its unchanging tempo, while the rhythm is a pattern in which a piece’s notes flow.

Incorporating exercise into your daily routine is an equally powerful way to train your brain. Researchers at the University of Illinois found physical activity significantly helps to build the brain’s ability to ignore distraction.
Exercise is the most primal mood improving activity. Through taking control of physical space and your body’s movements, it puts you in the moment. Physical activity also releases endorphins, the natural hormone known for positive effects on stress and anxiety.

Is there any reason why our brains enjoy loud music?
You might be surprised but there are five of them!
The first one is about the ability to hear all the details and different parts of a song.
Second, loud music relieves stress, when you listen to loud music, endorphins are released. This connection between your inner ear and the pleasure centers in the brain is stimulated by low frequencies above 90 decibels, for example, a loud rock concert is about 120 dB.
Third, you can literally get pumped up by loud music, as music can lead to an increased body temperature and heart rate. There’s a reason why almost everybody in the gym walks around wearing headphones.
Fourth: Ever had those goosebumps when your favorite song comes up? That sensation is called ‘frisson’ and it happens when dopamine floods your body. Firstly, our brain releases dopamine when songs we like to reach their peak. However, research has also found that the anticipation of these moments triggers a dopamine release.
Last, but not least: Loud music blocks out the world. Loud music takes over the brain: it overwhelms the other senses, blocking out other stimulants (such as surrounding sounds) so you can focus on just 1 task.
But, just like the rest in life: everything in moderation. We mixed loud, up-tempo tracks in our high-speed playlist. The music is fast, so you can use this playlist not only for driving but also for jogging.
Too much of a loud thing can be dangerous, so take good care of those precious ears and be responsible when listening to loud music especially on a road!

► Many producers nowadays use samples from traditional Asian music. These tunes gave a great melodic spice to a song, and are pleasurable to listen to.
What is the Japanese instrument Koto and how it is played in the modern days?
A koto is a type of zither. Ok, so what’s a zither? A zither is an instrument that has the stings that are parallel to the soundbox (not perpendicular like a harp) and the start and end of the strings are over or within the bounds of the soundbox (the if they don’t have a neck - unless that neck is hollow and that hollow space is acoustically coupled to the soundbox.)
It’s not a harp, because harp strings are perpendicular to the soundbox. It’s not a lute-like thing (that also includes things like guitars or violins and the like) because it has no neck.
The closest thing that most people have seen in the US is an autoharp (which also isn’t a harp for the same reasons). But both kinds of dulcimers are also related.
The normal koto is about 6″ long and contains 13 strings. The strings are traditionally made from silk, but today are made from a plastic called Tetron that is much like Nylon except not quite so elastic and is textured like silk such that when you move your claws lengthwise down the string it makes a sound that is supposed to resemble the wind.
In more modern times koto with 17, 25, and more strings are available, but 17 is the next most common after 13 strings, and even the 17 strings are quite rare.
Koto is a member of the Asian long curved zither family. In addition to the Japanese Koto, China has the Guzheng (with 21 strings), Korea has the Gayageum with 12 strings, and Viet Nam has the 16 string Dan Tranh. While the strings may be made out of differing materials, they all share the characteristic of moving bridges as one way to tune the instrument.
Today many people play the koto, but not so much in Japan. Koto in Japan is a lot like a recorder or lute players in the west - they are active and vocal and keeping it alive, but few people really pay any attention.

Driving can be nerve-racking at times, so how can we ease this tension?
For some people that are accustomed to driving a car, it can be one of the most pleasant moments of the day. For others, anxiety creeps in whenever they have to return to the steering wheel. But whatever the type of person you are, science suggests something to help relieve the stress. That is, of course, listening to music while you're driving. There are some guidelines, however - the music shouldn’t be too fast, it should evoke good emotions in you and it shouldn’t be distracting. Hereby we present to you our latest chillstep playlist.
This mix feels like the speed of life. The tempo of the chillstep tracks presented here suits both a pedal to the metal drive through the night city and inspired hasteless creative work in the evening.
Chillstep genre is all about this. It takes inspiration from dubstep, but is much more subdued and aimed at relaxation. Deep bass gives a solid foundation for a track and shuffled percussion constantly pushes everything forward. Tracks are often divided into 5 sections: long ambient intro, then ‘verse’ that introduces the main idea infused with bass wobbles, echoed vocals and glass sounds, followed by a bridge that turns the energy down to highlight the second ‘verse’ and then an outro.
