A visionary collection of films by 11 of the world’s most vital urban artists, each film inspired by a track on U2’s Songs of Innocence album.
Taking the political murals of Northern Ireland as a reference point, and chosen for their ability to capture the imaginations of their audiences, the 11 artists were given complete creative freedom to showcase their personal responses to U2’s music, through a series of part-animated, part live action films.
Films of Innocence takes these artists and their works from the streets to the screen, as they scale the globe, play with time, and weave between heightened reality and animated dreamscapes. The result is an essential visual counterpoint to the album.

A.R. Rahman joined U2 onstage at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai last night to perform their new track ‘Ahimsa’ in celebration of the band’s first ever visit to India. The performance also features the debut appearance of Rahman’s daughters - Khatija Rahman and Raheema Rahman, along with singer-songwriter Rianjali Bhowmick - all of whom also feature on the track.

Sarah Ritter is a Director/Editor from Villa Hills, Kentucky. Sarah studied marketing at Belmont University but has been anything from a costume designer to a DP on set. This past year Sarah has refined her focus to directing both music videos and narrative films. Sarah’s debut short film Hyde has been selected for over 10 film festivals and won the Luna Collective Film Festival’s award for best short film as well as Independent Shorts awards for best first-time director and best debut short film. With two narrative projects in pre-production including her debut feature-length film, we can expect to see even more of Sarah’s directing work in the near future!
"When I listened to the song, it instantly felt familiar, the lyrics it felt like a letter to home and the writer was deeply homesick or missing someone. I imagined a distant love back home in Ireland who represented something simpler, more free and pure than the bright lights of fame and success. I thought about how hard it must’ve been to be an artist in a small mining town in Ireland, and the caged birds in the video for “Red Mining Hill” symbolize being held back from your dreams by a community who doesn’t celebrate let alone understand who you are. This song is perhaps the opposite side of that coin, where getting what you thought you wanted isn’t as great as it seems and maybe life before wasn’t so bad after all. The birds are meant to represent the longing to fly away and the freedom of being with your true love."

Christina Bryson, known by the moniker Average Cowgirl, is an LA based director/photographer specializing in analog video. The inspiration from the piece came from studying U2's work from the early 90s.
"I was especially inspired by their visuals from this era and took note of their love of Wim Wenders (one of my favorite directors!). I naturally am drawn to visuals from this decade and video glitch art in general so wanted to reimagine a video for their new version of "Until the End of the World". I grew up listening to U2 with my dad so this band always brings up good memories for me. Honoured to have contributed to this project."

Alex Chaloff is a director and cinematographer based in Nashville, TN. He has worked with some of the most respected names in music including Sheryl Crow, Carrie Underwood, Dolly Parton, Chris Stapleton, Jeff Beck, Billie Eilish, Brian Wilson, Miley Cyrus, John Legend, and H.E.R.
Alex has directed major commercial campaigns for brands such as Fender, Spotify, Jared, Rolling Stone, Paramount, Volvo and Google. With viewership in the hundreds of millions, his work has been featured on ABC, AppleTV, Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, Good Morning America, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show, and The Late Show.
"I wanted to see how much of a story I could communicate with just a compelling, dialog free performance in a single locked off shot. Our actress, @matishaw, was able to capture the essence of the song's free spirited protagonist, giving the viewer a glimpse of her complicated life."

Born and raised in Kaiserslautern, Germany, Samuel McKnight grew up as a military brat in Lawton, Oklahoma. At an early age of nine, Samuel started recording music videos on his VCR and developed a strong passion for the world of music videos. Every summer, Samuel would travel to Mississippi with his dad listening to music while visualizing moving images. It was on these road trips where his passion continued to develop towards an ability to tell musically driven stories in a unique fashion. When his military career ended in 2013, Samuel attended the New York Film Academy and has since found his home directing music videos and shooting photos in Los Angeles.

Byron Spencer is a multidisciplinary artist who’s work spans between photography, directing, creative direction and music. His visual work delivers pulsing hits of colour and humour that is often contrasted with under tones of emotive storytelling. He has recently shown a retrospective of his multimedia work at the Sydney Powerhouse Museum.
"I wanted to create a video that had a feeling of freedom and hope from the point of view of a child. Moving through time and catapulting into their future. I wanted to cast an expressive dancer to emphasise more emotion and give a platform show case such a genre for the youth. I wanted to have a sense of dreaming and coming of age, contrasted against the feeling of speed and time. Flying through life. And loosely inspired by the film name of which this song was originally written - ‘The Long Walk to Freedom’."

Terrence O’Connor is a creative director and photographer based in LA. His partner is actor and comedian Benito Skinner, known online as @Bennydrama7. The two have worked together since the day they met.
“I wanted to create a video that celebrated our relationship as gay men. There’s a symmetry that exists within, but together we are whole. Two parallel life paths that managed to intersect. Thank you to the legendary U2 for this iconic song. It is exactly how I feel. Two hearts beating as one.”

"My name is Phil Berge and I'm a tattoo artist currently tattooing at International tattoo studio in Montreal, a shop that I co-own with 2 other partners. I have been tattooing for the last 12 years and created animation tattoos about 7 years ago. Animation tattoos have birthed from my passion of traditional animation and traditional tattooing. The combination of the two makes interesting tattoo compositions that magically come to life when photographed and animated with classic frame by frame animation methods.
For the piece, I was inspired by the old days of seeing U2 music videos on TV. Which is why I chose to use a classic vintage TV with black and grey mouths that I could animate to make it sing the song. The TV then creates an electrical storm around them to go along with the main theme of the song and had more movement to the tattoo and animation."
