The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, occur when the magnetosphere is disturbed enough by the solar wind that the trajectories of charged particles in both the solar wind and the magnetospheric plasma, mainly in the form of electrons and protons, precipitate into the upper atmosphere ( thermosphere / exosphere ) due to the Earth's magnetic field, where their energy is lost.

The word "Aurora" comes from the Latin word for "dawn, morning light", as it was previously thought that auroras were the first light of dawn.
