40 Songs re-recorded by us. Re-imagined by you. #U2SOS40
Songs Of Surrender. Out Now: http://u2.lnk.to/SOS
Maddy Rotman is a photographer. Nico Geyer is a musician and leadman of a band called Nitefire. Nitefire loves U2.
Maddy and Nico on the piece:
This piece was inspired by the confusion, listlessness, and unassuredness one feels when becoming a young man - a central theme in U2's body of work. The feeling of frenzy the piece evokes was just as much a part of its creation process. With just one rainy LA afternoon to shoot, Nico and I became hellbent on taking as many photos as possible in as many locations as possible; pitching, with great success, to all of our friends, “Wanna be in a U2 video?” We snapped quickly outside strangers' houses in the Valley before we could get caught, embraced enamored onlookers in Santa Monica looking for their big break, crashed a child's birthday party at our favorite park, and saw corners of our city we may have never seen otherwise. To turn “good“ to “great”, I did it all with my best friend.
Nico on U2:
Growing up, U2 was always the music my friends’ parents listened to. U2’s Vertigo was also the first song I listened to in 2007. As I grew older, more and more of U2’s discography began to unfold before me, and more of their songs, all the way from Boy through Zooropa to All That You Can’t Leave Behind, became staples in my musical appetite. Today, I’m constantly referencing their work both musically and visually. Their tact for songwriting, their ability to meld genres, their beautifully simplistic lyricism, and their confidence are what makes them one of my favorite bands. As a friend put it once, you don’t get U2 until life gets 2 U.

Lyrics:
From father to son
The blood runs thin
Ooh, see the faces frozen (still)
Against the wind.
The seam is split
The coal-face cracked
The lines are long
There's no going back.
Through hands of steel
And heart of stone
Our labour day
Has come and gone.
They leave me holdin' on
In Red Hill Town.
See the lights go down on ...
Hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to.
I'm still waiting
I'm hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to.
The glass is cut
The bottle run dry.
Our love runs cold
In the caverns of the night.
We're wounded by fear
Injured in doubt.
I can lose myself
You I can't live without.
Yeah, you keep me holdin' on
In Red Hill Town.
See the lights go down on
Hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to.
I'm still waiting
I'm hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to
On to.
We scorch the earth
Set fire to the sky
And we stooped so low
To reach so high.
A link is lost
The chain undone.
We wait all day
For night to come
And it comes like a hunter (child).
I'm hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to.
I'm still waiting
I'm hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to.
We see love, slowly stripped away
Our love has seen its better day.
Hangin' on
Lights go down on Red Hill
The lights go down on Red Hill.
The lights go down on Red Hill.
The lights go down on Red Hill Town..

Lyrics:
Was a Monday morning
'bout a quarter past four
You were busy dreaming
So what did you wake up for?
Are you a stranger in your own life
What are you hiding behind those eyes?
Is no one looking for you there?
You know your song saved my life
I don't sing it just so I can get by
Won't you hear me when I tell you darlin’
I sing it to survive
You're looking for a miracle
The kind that science can't explain
The man you carry in your heart
Is only comfortable when he's in pain
Are you a stranger in your own life?
What are you hiding behind those eyes?
Can anyone find you there?
Or just me?
You know your song saved my life
I don't sing it just so I can get by
Won't you hear me when I tell you darlin’
I sing it to survive
Your song saved my life
The worst and the best days of my life
I was broken now I’m open your love keeps me alive
It keeps me alive
Your song saved my life
The worst and the best days of my life
Your song saved my life
Song saved my
Song saved my
Your song saved my life
Your song got me through tonight
Your song saved my life
Song saved my
Song saved my life
All the way from Electric Lady Studios in New York City, U2 performing 'This Is' on A Night For Christy.
A couple of weeks back the band dropped by the New York studios of Oliver Jeffers and Mac Premo, the creative duo behind the 'Ordinary Love' lyric video. Oliver and Mac have now come up with a new cut of the video, this one to accompany Paul Epworth's version of the track.

Lyrics:
Is there a time for keeping your distance
A time to turn your eyes away.
Is there a time for keeping your head down
For getting on with your day.
Is there a time for kohl and lipstick
Is there time for cutting hair
Is there a time for high street shopping
To find the right dress to wear.
Here she comes, heads turn around
Here she comes, to take her crown.
Is there a time to run for cover
A time for kiss and tell.
A time for different colours
Different names you find hard to spell.
Is there a time for first communion
A time for East 17
Is there time to turn to Mecca
Is there time to be a beauty queen.
Here she comes, beauty plays the clown
Here she comes, surreal in her crown.
Dici che il fiume
Trova la via al mare
E come il fiume
Giungerai a me
Oltre i confini
E le terre assetate
Dici che come il fiume
Come il fiume...
L'amore giungerà
L'amore...
E non so più pregare
E nell'amore non so più sperare
E quell'amore non so più aspettare
Is there a time for tying ribbons
A time for Christmas trees.
Is there a time for laying tables
When the night is set to freeze.

Ella is a Los Angeles based photographer, originally from Australia. Self taught and driven by other artists. She finds herself immersed in all mediums of art, whether it’s music, painting, writing poetry, playing her guitar. Passionate about creating and enjoying the beautiful landscape that the west coast has to offer.
"A lot of inspiration was drawn from the idea of adolescence… the idea of youth, carelessness and how we all come together as one at the end of the day. The term “Dirty Day” really spoke to me, I feel we can all relate to those fleeting moments in life that feel tender… yet you still have the dirt underneath your nails, the sweat on your back. It was raw and honest material that I wanted to capture. I knew I wanted the visuals to flow with the lyrics, I knew I wanted other artists to be involved in this project. To see everyone rally around and support, to see the group of young, passionate creatives I’ve welcomed into my life and vice versa was the most liberating moment through all of this."
"U2 has had a huge impact in my life. I come from a small-town in Australia and it was always my Dad blasting every album by them in his truck as we’d drive to the local ice cream shop or heading to the public pool. The amount of posters I’d watch him hang in our house, the amount of times I’d hear him sing “It’s a beautiful day” as I’d run to give him a hug. Bono was all I knew when it came to my Dad, I really can’t think of any other artist or band that I’d listen to with him. He came to visit me in the states a few years ago and the first thing he said was “When are we going to Joshua Tree?” U2 has been some sort of symbol in my life that connects me to my Dad, so this project was very emotional for me. I’m still pinching myself."
