The Irish artist Hozier recorded Take Me To Church in 2013, past midnight in his attic at home.
It was then later released as a free download. As an unknown and struggling artist at that time, the song became what every artist hopes for: a massive, worldwide hit. Pairing religious terminology to describe a romantic relationship was Hozier’s way to state his frustration with “the hypocrisy of the Catholic church”, as he explained in an interview with Rolling Stone. The music video, a keystone of Hozier’s success, very visually describes the hate and violence against a gay couple, which underlines Hozier’s statement in the Huffington Post that ""The song was always about humanity at its most natural, and how that is undermined ceaselessly by religious organizations and those who would have us believe they act in its interests”.
