Warm with You
This song went through about 6 or 7 different versions before I finally landed on the right palette of sound, and I’m glad I took the time with it and didn’t just settle for one of the first few versions of it. I guess that’s when you know you really care about a song. It started as a piano ballad, and slowly through each re-recording of the song made its way to a folky, acoustic number. I wrote it about an old relationship of mine, one which romanticised the idea of running away with them, away from all the things we knew and into the middle of nowhere. It’s something we always talked about together, but never did. Escapism, for a better term.
Unfortunate Love (feat Harrison Storm)
I had been sitting on the music for this for a few months, and wasn't sure if I could come up with anything lyrically to feel right, so I put my feelers out and got Harrison Storm on board. I sent him the song with next to no guidance and said 'just send me some gibberish back and see if you vibe it' or something casual along those lines. As soon as Harrison sent me something back we jumped straight in the studio and didn't leave till we had it written and finished. Helps when they are your housemate too. We were living together at the time, so we often found ourselves bouncing ideas back and forth from each other whenever we were in a creative lull.
We Can Take Our time
This is a song all about reconnection. You drift away from people all the time, and usually you're comfortable with that but when you drift from someone you had loved more than anything else, it can be a long road to feeling whole again. In this case, we reconnected and it was one of the greatest and most important moments in my life. I wanted to write a song about that feeling. Learning to trust again and letting someone back in.
Mountain Steeps
I wanted the song to feel like a long walk, up a big hill and to express that feeling of finally reaching the top of it. It’s a journey song. I got stuck in a routine of going on lots of small hiking trips and big walks around the area I lived in at the time. This is an ode to that exploration and some of the things I thought about on some of those long walks. It took so many different forms throughout its creation. I probably said it was finished four or five times before completely re-recording the whole song. It had ended up being my favourite track on that EP, I think purely because I didn't give up on it like I did with so many others throughout the process of that whole EP.
Visible
This was all about driving back to my home town where I grew up. I’m sure lots of people share something similar to this, in that you always get a flood of memories when you are driving back home and turn onto that road that you know so well, or you pass that tree that you used to climb. It’s a song about memories and the things that make them flood back into your mind's eye. Recording this song was really quite a simple process. I had an old tape recorder that was just sitting on top of my piano, pushed record and just played what came out. Lyrics are where I spent most of my time on this song. It needed to feel raw and vulnerable, which is that feeling I always get when returning to my home town.
Axel Flóvent - Picture of You (feat Hayden Calnin)
It was so nice to finally be able to write something with Axel and this was one of those songs that just ended up being so easy and fluid in its creation. What started as an old idea of mine on a hard drive that was probably never going to see the light of day, ended up being transformed and developed into such an emotional and personal song for Axel and myself.
