Alexandra Thurmond is a director and creative director originally from Long Beach, California.

“I’ve always been obsessed with music and movies, and love working at the intersection of the two. Ever since I was young, I’ve been drawn to work that explores relationships, our connection to ourselves and others, and to the world around us.”

U2 is one of those bands that has always felt iconic, from the first time I heard their music as a kid, to watching their videos on MTV. Beyond the music, I always admired their activism and outspoken support of the causes they believed in.

When I started thinking about this project, I wanted to make something that continued that spirit, and as I started looking through references, I came across a photo I’d taken of Steve.

If you live on the East Side, chances are you’ve seen Steve Sharp. Every Friday evening, he stands at the corner of Hollywood and Sunset with a double-sided sign that says ‘Spread Love,’ ‘Celebrate Peace’. I’d driven by him many times over the years, and it would always make my day to see him out there. His energy is infectious.

When I got in touch about the project, I learned that he’d been doing this for over 20 years. What started as a protest against the invasion of Iraq, with hundreds of other supporters, has become a personal vigil for Steve: “I’m no longer protesting anything, I’m promoting peace in my own way.’ I am so honored that he wanted to be a part of this video, and grateful that U2 has given us the chance to share his story, and promote peace, from the streets of LA.”
